Girls Golf Sectionals Recap

The girls golf team recently was invited to compete in Sectionals held Monday, October 6, at Wood Forts Golf Course in Troy, Missouri.  Though, not placing as well as they were hoping as a team overall , individually a few girls still cropgolfsectionalsmanaged to push through and make their way to the State Finals.

“Coming into sectionals we were hoping for at least one girl to make it through to the State Finals,” Coach Beckhamn said. “We thought that only our seniors had a chance to make it but as a result we ended up with two girls to make it, including one senior and one freshman.”

Senior, Maleya Schmidt placed 12th at sectionals, qualifying herself to advance to state and is hoping to play golf on scholarship in college after she gets out of high school. All season the girls focus on working hard, improving, and critiquing their game and technique to help prepare themselves for competitions similar to this.  Having all 5 girls make it through to sectionals was a big deal for North’s Girls Golf team.   You can’t ask for anything more than what they have accomplished.

“The goal for the team was to have everyone just play their best and try to qualify to state,” Schmidt said. “My favorite part was just having the experience of getting to go to sectionals with my team as a whole. Together we calm each others nerves and are always there for eachother with support and help.”

The girls were up against some tough competition including  Fort Zumwalt South, Hickman, Rock Bridge, Parkway Central, and Francis Howell.  Unable to get a practice round in before sectionals  it was left up to the girls to practice on their own.

“I did feel prepared, but not to my fullest potential,” Schmidt said. “I played safe and not how I know how to. The hardest part for us was definitely putting, the greens were fast and we weren’t expecting it.  Every girl who competed in sectionals for FHN could have made it to state this year but some of them just had a off day.”

Although the outcome of sectionals wasn’t up to the higher standards they were hoping of, the girls still played as a team, had fun, and were very excited heading in together. This will be the girls first time going to sectionals as a team in the past  couple years.

“After only being coach for one year so far, I’m very proud and honored of all the girls on the team and their hard work,” Coach Beckhamn said.  “Not only am I proud of the girls who made it to state, but every girl who competed in sectionals for FHN. I believe any of the girls could have made it to state this year but some of them just had a bad day at the very worst time in the season.”
